Introducing the Word of God: John 1:1–18

"In the beginning was the Word …” These opening words of The Gospel According to John form one of the greatest literary opening lines in all human history. This is how the apostle John opens his story to tell us who Jesus is. In the first 18 verses of John chapter 1, the apostle John hooks the reader’s interest, introduces the main characters, gives direction on where the plot is going, and introduces the main themes and symbols. And as we meet the main character of this story, John hopes it will leave us with a feeling of awe and wonder.
