In this second session of The Grand Story of Scripture, we dive into the Garden Kingdom and its Fall (Genesis 1–3). These opening chapters aren’t just the beginning of the Bible—they’re the exposition of the true story of the world, the story that explains who we are, why we’re here, what went wrong, and where our hope lies.
Pastor Steven Hiller helps us unpack the Bible’s plot structure—exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution—and see how Genesis lays the foundation for everything else. God, the Creator and King, designs a good world and calls humanity to bear His image as sub-rulers in His Kingdom. But the entrance of sin and rebellion changes everything. Still, even in the midst of the Fall, God gives a promise—the Seed of the Woman who will one day crush the serpent and restore His Kingdom.
This class is designed to help you, the rooted seeker, grasp not just the details of the Bible but the Grand Story it tells—a story that makes sense of your life and gives hope for the future.

Life gets messy. Maybe you’ve made a bad financial decision, lost your temper with someone you love, or looked for comfort in the wrong places. In Genesis 38, we meet Judah and Tamar in one of the messiest stories in the Bible—and yet it’s here that God’s sovereign grace shines through.
This sermon, Pastor Mace Perez shows how God preserved His promise of the coming Savior through scandal and failure. Out of Judah’s brokenness came Perez, David, and ultimately Jesus Christ—the One who enters our mess and brings redemption.
If you’ve ever wondered, “Can God really use me after the mess I’ve made?”—this message is for you.

Our world is broken—filled with jealousy, anger, betrayal, and violence. In moments like these, we ask: Where is God? What happens to His purposes when evil seems to win?
In this episode, Pastor Mace Perez explores the story of Joseph in Genesis 37—the beloved son rejected by his brothers, betrayed for silver, and handed over to the nations. Even through their sin, God was working sovereignly behind the scenes to bring salvation. Joseph’s story points us to Jesus, the greater Beloved Son, who was rejected, betrayed, crucified, and raised to bring redemption for the world.
If you’re wrestling with brokenness—in your life or in our culture—this episode shows us that God’s purposes cannot be stopped. What others mean for evil, God weaves for good.

Are people born wicked, or do they have wickedness thrust upon them? Our culture loves reimagined villains and flawed heroes, but Genesis 36 gives us a better story.
In this episode, Pastor Mace Perez walks us through the “villain origin story” of Esau and the nation of Edom. Their story represents the seed of the serpent in rebellion against God’s promises. And yet, the good news of the Bible is that through Jesus Christ—the promised Seed of the Woman—redemption has come not only for Israel, but for all nations… even those who seem far from God.
If you’ve ever wrestled with the battle between good and evil, or wondered whether there’s hope for those who feel like the outsiders in God’s story, this message will encourage you.

We live in a world where injustice is all around us—on the news, in our neighborhoods, and even in our closest relationships.
How do we respond when wrongs are done to us or to those we love?
In this episode, Pastor Mace Perez walks through Genesis 34, the hard story of Dinah and the responses of her father Jacob and her brothers. This passage forces us to wrestle with our own hearts: will we respond with passivity, vengeance, or with faith in Christ?
At The Journey Church Houston, we believe that Jesus is the One who bore the ultimate injustice on the cross and who will one day return to set all things right.

In Genesis 33, Jacob finally comes face-to-face with his brother Esau. After years of scheming, striving, and fear, Jacob still thinks blessing is about “stuff.” He tries to secure his future by offering gifts and seeking Esau’s favor. But God shows him something deeper: true blessing is not possessions, power, or human approval. Blessing is life with God in His eternal kingdom.
This episode presses a question we all need to answer: Who is your Lord? Are you looking for security in people, possessions, or power or resting in the God who keeps His promises?
Join Pastor Steven as he unpacks this powerful passage and points us to the hope of a God who fulfills His covenant, protects His people, and offers the blessing of His presence.

What happens when God brings you to the end of yourself?
In Genesis 32, Jacob wrestles with God and learns a life-changing truth: blessing comes through surrender, not strength.
Whether you’re struggling with parenting, career stress, financial pressure, loss, or spiritual doubt, this episode explores why God sometimes strips away our self-sufficiency so we can discover His all-sufficiency.
We’ll look at Jacob’s story, Paul’s testimony, and the ultimate example in Jesus’ death and resurrection, showing why you can trust Him with your weakness today.
